Liposuction for Men

Both men and women alike struggle with unwanted bulges of fat that don’t seem to respond to diet or exercise, but the male body tends to store fat in different places than the female body. Liposuction for men approaches the male physique with an understanding of the most common problem spots for men.

Dr. Jennifer Harrington is a board-certified plastic surgeon who is highly experienced in performing cosmetic procedures for men seeking to improve their look. During your consultation, she’ll take the time to analyze your appearance concerns and develop a plan designed to help you meet your goals.

Harrington + Associates Plastic Surgery has helped men and women from the Twin Cities metro area and throughout Minnesota achieve their appearance goals with liposuction. Contact us online or call our Plymouth office today at 651-290-7600 for more information about liposuction, including pricing.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Male Liposuction?

Most men who are at or near their target weight but still feel unhappy with stubborn fat deposits can be good candidates for liposuction. Some of the most common reasons men consider getting liposuction include:*

  • Fat deposits in the midsection or chest are resistant to weight loss efforts
  • Bulges of fat prevent clothing from fitting comfortably
  • Fatty rolls on the back or abdomen hide underlying muscle tone
  • Thighs chafe when walking or running

About SAFELipo®

Dr. Harrington uses a specialized body contouring technique known as SAFELipo®, which requires advanced training and certification. SAFELipo® consists of three important steps. During the first step, power-assisted liposuction (PAL) gently isolates unwanted fat while preserving the surrounding tissue. In the second step, fat is aspirated using a suction device. Although all liposuction procedures use suction to remove fat, the SAFELipo® method uses smaller, more precise cannulas, which means significantly less bruising and swelling than with traditional liposuction.*

By putting the final touches on the body’s improved contour, the third step of SAFELipo® involves fat redistribution.* Dr. Harrington leaves a localized area of fat grafts in the treatment area, which acts as a buffer, preventing the skin from attaching itself to the underlying muscle.* This final step is the key to safeguarding against contour irregularities, such as wavy skin or lumps that can occur with less sophisticated liposuction methods.*

Liposuction Incisions

Incisions for liposuction are small and normally very discreet.* During your procedure, Dr. Harrington will make a few short incisions in and around the treatment area(s). She will then use these incisions to access fat cells in the subcutaneous layer with a special instrument called a cannula. The cannula is used to dispense tumescent fluid, which breaks up fat cells while numbing the region, and finally removes excess fat cells using suction.

Your Male Lipo Procedure

Liposuction is a same-day procedure that can be performed using either general or local anesthesia, depending on the individual case. The entire process takes around 2 to 3 hours from start to finish,* and takes place at an accredited surgery center.

You should plan to arrive at the surgical facility 1 hour before your procedure start time. Patients who are put under general anesthesia for their liposuction surgery will also need to stay for 1 hour after their procedure, and a friend or family member will need to drive them home. An adult should plan to stay with you for 24 hours after your surgery.

Depending on your goals, Dr. Harrington may recommend additional treatments to complement your liposuction results. Men who have lost a significant amount of weight may wish to combine their liposuction with a tummy tuck if loose skin is present. Men struggling with deposits of fat in the chest area or under the chin may also be good candidates for male breast reduction or Kybella™ double chin treatment.

Liposuction Recovery

Most men take around 1 week off of work and away from other normal activities after getting a liposuction procedure.* Dr. Harrington may ask you to wear a special post-surgical compression garment during the initial stage of your recovery to help promote blood circulation and minimize swelling.* Post-surgical swelling and bruising is normal for men who get lipo, and should fade within the first couple of weeks of the healing process.* Men who work a desk job that does not involve heavy lifting may wish to return to work after only a couple of days.*

Although individual experience varies, most men get an idea of their liposuction results by the end of the first month of your recovery.* However, depending on the extent of your procedure, your final results may not be visible for 6 months.*

Bear in mind that while liposuction removes fat cells, the procedure will not prevent future weight gain.* Men who commit to a healthy and active lifestyle can maintain a steady weight that won’t compromise their liposuction results.*

It’s critical that you and Dr. Harrington discuss any potential risks and complications associated with liposuction prior to your surgery. If you notice any sudden pain or swelling, notify our office immediately.
