Gynecomastia Treatment

Gynecomastia, also known as “man boobs,” can be detrimental to men’s self-image. Gynecomastia is caused by a hormonal imbalance that causes men to store a disproportionate amount of fat in the chest area. This fairly common condition not only causes feelings of embarrassment, but can also result in nipple chafing and other physical discomforts, preventing men from feeling comfortable and confident in their own bodies. Male breast reduction treats gynecomastia by removing fatty deposits that contribute to the appearance of “man boobs.”*

Our board-certified plastic surgeons are skilled in performing cosmetic procedures specifically catered to the male body, including male breast reduction. During your initial one-on-one consultation, they’ll discuss your goals with you and develop an approach that’s custom-tailored to your needs.

Harrington + Associates Plastic Surgery has helped men from the Minneapolis-St. Paul area and across Minnesota with gynecomastia treatment. Contact us online or call our Plymouth office today at 651-290-7600 for more information about gynecomastia surgery, including pricing.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Male Breast Reduction?

Most men who wish to have a more masculine shape to their chest can be good candidates for gynecomastia treatment. Some of the most common reasons men consider male breast reduction include:*

  • Noticeable fatty tissue stored in the breasts
  • Weight fluctuations have caused the chest to become flabby
  • Protruding nipples cause chafing

Gynecomastia Surgery Incisions

Because gynecomastia is a customized treatment that varies for each patient, the exact incisions used will depend upon your specific case. Men who can achieve their ideal outcome using liposuction alone will only have a few, small incisions surrounding the breast area.* Your surgeon will use these incisions to insert an instrument called a cannula, which is used to remove unwanted fat cells with suction.

Men with a greater amount of swollen glandular tissue in their chests may require an excision technique to create the desired outcome.* Your surgeon may make an incision around the areola for such cases, through which she will remove the excess tissue and fat from the chest area.

Your Male Breast Reduction Procedure

Male breast reduction is a same-day procedure that can be performed either using local or general anesthesia. Many men who only require liposuction to achieve ideal results can have the procedure using a local anesthetic, while men requiring excision of the breast tissue may be placed under general anesthesia. All treatments are performed in our licensed surgical facility.

Patients who are placed under general anesthesia should plan to arrive at the surgery center 1 hour before their procedure begins and stay for at least 1 hour after their procedure is finished. A friend or family member will need to drive you home, and an adult should plan to stay with you for at least 24 hours after your surgery.

Depending on your appearance goals, your surgeon may suggest additional treatments to create your ideal results. Many men suffering from gynecomastia also have persistent bulges of fat in other areas of the body and may benefit from additional liposuction. Men who have lost a significant amount of weight may also choose to have a tummy tuck, while men with a double chin may choose nonsurgical Kybella™ treatments.

Male Breast Reduction Recovery

Most men take several days to 1 week away from work and other normal activities after getting treatment for gynecomastia.* Your surgeon may ask you to wear a special post-surgical garment for the first couple of weeks of your recovery to promote blood circulation and minimize swelling.* Any bruising and swelling typically begins to decrease after the first few days of your recovery.*

While everyone’s experience is unique, most men’s final results aren’t be visible for around 3 months.* At this point, swelling should be gone and your body should have fully healed.*

It’s important to discuss any risks and complications associated with gynecomastia surgery with your surgeon prior to your procedure. If you notice a sudden increase in swelling accompanied by sharp pain, contact our office immediately.
