PRP Facial Rejuvenation

Platelet-rich plasma, or PRP, is a common natural ingredient for anti-aging skin therapy. Also known as the Vampire Facial®, the Vampire Facelift® and collagen induction therapy, these are treatments that combine microneedling with PRP plasma drawn from your own body to rejuvenate the facial skin and tissue. The platelet-rich plasma is easily absorbed into the body, promoting healing, rapid cell turnover and the production of natural proteins important for smoothing out wrinkles.

Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Jennifer Harrington understands that everyone’s facial rejuvenation needs are different. That’s why she offers numerous options such as SkinPen® PRP rejuvenation, as well as a full range of other surgical and nonsurgical treatments to meet the needs of every individual.

Harrington Plastic Surgery has helped women and men from throughout the Minneapolis-St. Paul area achieve their brightest, healthiest look with PRP anti-aging treatments. Who Is a Good Candidate for SkinPen® with PRP?

Almost anyone can be a great candidate for microneedling with PRP. Some of the most common reasons to consider PRP treatments include:

  • Dull or uneven facial complexion
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Lose or thinning facial skin
  • Acne scars

Your PRP Facial Rejuvenation Treatment

Our medical practice offers microneedling treatments using platelet-rich plasma to induce cell turnover, healing and natural protein production. This nonsurgical rejuvenating treatment is popularly known as the Vampire Facial®, due to its use of platelets from the patient’s own blood, or collagen induction therapy owing to its reputation for stimulating collagen production.

PRP treatments include microneedling using the SkinPen® device and can deliver more comprehensive results than are typically seen through skin resurfacing alone. After drawing a sample of your blood, our certified plastic surgery nurse or certified physician assistant will use a centrifuge to separate the plasma. The plasma is then used as a topical treatment during the microneedling process (Vampire Facial®) or it can be strategically injected into the target areas (Vampire Facelift®).

Depending on your unique complexion concerns, a range of needle depths may be used during your treatment. The longer the needle, the deeper the penetration into the skin’s surface, so longer needles may be used for deep scars or particularly damaged areas. Because microneedling creates tiny, micro-injuries in the skin, the PRP is able to penetrate the skin’s surface with ease, activating the stem cells in the skin and tissue.

After, any remaining PRP may be injected into prominent scars, wrinkles and other areas using a fine needle. This process, known as the Vampire Facelift®, stimulates healing from within, promoting increased blood flow to the face and activating the skin’s stem cells.

Most people see the best results after a series of 3 to 6 microneedling and PRP treatments spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart. Some combine the effects of deep rejuvenating treatments like PRP facials with dermal fillers for a nonsurgical facelift alternative.

PRP Facial Rejuvenation Downtime

PRP facial rejuvenation treatments are nonsurgical and therefore are considered “lunchtime rejuvenation” procedures that require little to no downtime. Your provider will inform you of what you can expect after treatment based on the approach you choose, but in general, you can expect some swelling and redness for at least the first day. After getting microneedling with PRP or collagen induction therapy, your provider may ask you to leave the remaining PRP on the surface of your skin for several hours, making these treatments ideal when you have nothing planned for the rest of the day.

You may resume wearing makeup the day after your PRP treatment. Any remaining pinkness can be concealed with makeup and you may return to your normal routine. Dr. Harrington may ask you to use a special skincare regimen for the days following your treatment. You should notice your skin appearing firmer, more youthful and more vibrant within the first week. Because PRP stimulates your skin’s growth factors, you may continue to see improvements for several months after treatment.

Complications resulting from PRP facial rejuvenation treatments are uncommon, but it’s still important to discuss any concerns with your provider prior to treatment. If you notice any persistent bruising or a sharp increase in swelling, notify our office immediately.
