Dr. Harrington is a scheduled “Global Hot Topic” speaker at the ASAPS Aesthetic Meeting 2018 in New York. The conference gathers ASAPS members together to evaluate techniques currently in the patient spotlight, as well as identify how to separate hype from reality.
The 10-year study on Sientra breast implants specifically looked at the long-term performance of cohesive silicone gel (“gummy bear”) breast implants. Study results were published in the April 2018 issue of the ASPS Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Journal.
A summary of results for aesthetic use after 10 years indicate a low (8.5%) rate of rupture along with a low (12.9%) rate of capsular contracture.
When used for breast reconstruction, Sientra implants had the lowest incidence of rupture and capsular contracture compared to Allergan and Mentor implants.
Additionally, study participants showed no incidence of breast implant–associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma.
