Recovery is one of the biggest questions women have when they’re considering a mommy makeover, and it’s one of the most important things to plan for. Unlike a single procedure, a mommy makeover typically combines breast and body surgery in one procedure, which means recovery can be more involved than either procedure would be on its own.
Most people feel significantly better within 2 to 3 weeks, but full recovery takes closer to 3 to 6 months. Here’s what to expect at each stage.
The First Week: Rest Is Your Job
The first week is the most demanding. You’ll be tired, sore and limited in your activity. Swelling and bruising are typically at their peak at this stage, drains may be in place and you’ll be spending most of your time resting in a reclined position. Most mommy makeover patients describe this week as uncomfortable but manageable with the medication and support they have in place.
This is the week where having help at home is non-negotiable. You won’t be able to lift your children, prepare meals or care for the household. Planning ahead for childcare and household support will make a significant difference in how smoothly this phase goes.
Dr. Harrington’s opioid-free surgery and recovery approach helps patients manage discomfort without the side effects of traditional pain medication, which many patients find makes this first week more tolerable than they anticipated.
Weeks 2 and 3: Getting Back on Your Feet
By week two, most people notice that energy starts to return, discomfort becomes more manageable and moving around the house is more comfortable. Many women are able to resume light daily activities and short walks by the end of this phase.
You’ll still need to wear a compression garment and avoid anything strenuous, but the worst of the recovery is typically behind you. Most patients who work desk jobs are able to return to work around weeks 2 to 3, depending on how quickly they’re healing.
Swelling is still present during this phase, especially if a tummy tuck was part of your mommy makeover. It’s important not to judge your results during this window. What you see now is not what the final outcome will look like.
Weeks 4 through 6: Expanding Activity
With clearance from Dr. Harrington, you can begin to gradually reintroduce light activity such as walking, light stretching and eventually some lower-body movement. Upper body exercise and anything that engages the core will need to wait longer, especially if muscle repair was part of your tummy tuck.
By the end of week six, many women will have returned to most of their normal routine. The compression garment is often no longer needed, and follow-up appointments will give you a clearer picture of how your healing is progressing.
Months 2 through 6: The Long Tail of Healing
Swelling in the abdomen can take 3 to 6 months to fully resolve, breast implants continue to settle and soften and scars begin to fade and flatten during this phase. Also during this time, your results should truly come into focus.
For women who want to maintain or enhance their results as they heal, this is also a good time to explore complementary treatments. EMSCULPT® NEO can help rebuild core strength and tone during this phase, and skin treatments can address texture and quality concerns that surgery alone doesn’t resolve.
