Who Is a Good Candidate for Double Chin Liposuction?
Double chin liposuction is ideal for virtually anyone who is bothered by excess fat beneath the chin and wants a more defined jawline and neck contour. The procedure specifically targets submental fat, or the fullness that creates the appearance of a “double chin.” Chin liposuction is most effective for those whose primary concern is fat rather than loose skin.
Good candidates are typically at or near a stable, healthy weight and in good overall physical health. Common reasons our Minneapolis-area patients consider double chin liposuction include:
- Submental fullness, or a visible double chin
- Poor jawline definition
- A neck profile that appears heavier in photos
- Persistent fat that does not respond to diet and exercise
- Wanting more dramatic improvement than nonsurgical treatments can provide
Benefits of Double Chin Liposuction
Double chin liposuction offers a targeted, surgical solution for reducing excess fat beneath the chin and restoring a more defined profile. By permanently removing fat cells in the submental area, the procedure creates a slimmer, more contoured appearance that cannot be achieved with diet and exercise alone.
Key benefits include:
- Sharper jawline definition
- Reduction or elimination of a double chin
- Improved side profile
- Permanent removal of treated fat cells
- Quick outpatient procedure
- Minimal scarring with small, discreet incisions
- High patient satisfaction with noticeable contour improvement
Both chin liposuction and CoolSculpting® can reduce fullness beneath the chin, but they differ in approach and results. Chin liposuction is a surgical procedure that physically removes fat cells in one treatment, providing more immediate and dramatic contour improvement. It is often the better choice for men and women seeking significant jawline definition.
CoolSculpting is a non-surgical treatment that freezes fat cells, which are gradually eliminated by the body over several weeks. It offers minimal downtime but typically produces more subtle results and may require multiple sessions.
Dr. Harrington can help determine which option best aligns with your anatomy, goals and desired timeline for results at your consultation.
Your Consultation
Your chin liposuction consultation is the first step in determining whether you are a good candidate and what type of result you can expect. During this visit, Dr. Harrington will listen to your goals, concerns and expectations, as well as perform a physical evaluation to determine whether chin liposuction alone will achieve your desired contour or if another procedure should be considered.
By the end of your consultation, you should have a clear understanding of the surgical plan, recovery process and anticipated results.
Your Jawline Sculpting Procedure
Just like the incisions for liposuction of the body, incisions required to contour the jawline and sculpt the face are typically very small and discreet. Normally, one or more incisions are placed in and around the treatment area. Through these incisions, Dr. Harrington will insert a small tube-like device called a cannula, which will dispense a tumescent fluid before suctioning out unwanted fat cells.
Resulting scars are typically very small and discreet and will gradually improve and fade for up to a year or more, becoming even less visible.
Double chin lipo is a same-day procedure performed under general anesthesia. The surgery itself can take as little as 1 hour or less and takes place at our accredited surgical facility. You should arrive at the surgery center 45 minutes before your procedure start time and plan to stay for at least 1 hour after your procedure is finished.
Patients who are put under general anesthesia will need to be driven home by a friend or family member and arrange to have an adult stay with them for 24 hours after their surgery.
Depending on your individual needs, Dr. Harrington may recommend additional treatments.
Double Chin Liposuction Recovery
Most people who have double chin liposuction take 1 to 2 weeks away from work and other normal activities to allow their swelling to subside and their bodies to heal. Dr. Harrington may ask you to use bandages or a topical treatment over the incision locations to expedite the healing process. Swelling and bruising should steadily decrease over the first couple of weeks, and you should keep your skin protected from direct sun exposure for at least 6 months after your procedure.
It’s critical that you and Dr. Harrington discuss potential complications and risks associated with double chin liposuction prior to your surgery. If you notice any sharp rises in pain or a sudden increase in swelling, notify our office immediately.
Double Chin Liposuction Results
While you may notice improved jawline definition immediately after surgery, swelling can temporarily mask your final contour. In the first 1 to 2 weeks, the treated area may feel firm, swollen or slightly uneven as your body begins the healing process.
As swelling gradually subsides over the next several weeks, your jawline will become more refined and your neck profile slimmer. Most people see significant improvement within 4 to 6 weeks, with continued enhancement as residual swelling resolves.
Final results are typically visible between 4 and 6 months after your procedure, once all swelling has dissipated and the skin has fully adapted to the new contour. Because the fat cells removed during liposuction are permanently eliminated, results are long-lasting as long as you maintain a stable weight.
Jawline Sculpting FAQs
How much does double chin liposuction cost in Minneapolis?
The cost of chin lipo will vary, depending on facility fees, anesthesia and extent of treatment. For this reason, we will be able to provide you with a personalized cost estimate at the time of your consultation.
Will insurance cover double chin lipo?
No. Double chin liposuction is considered a cosmetic procedure and is generally not covered by insurance unless there is a documented medical need, which is rare. We do, however, offer several financing options to help make your procedure as affordable as possible.
What’s the best age for chin lipo?
There’s no single “best” age to get chin liposuction. Ideal candidates are in good overall health, close to their ideal weight and bothered by submental fullness. Many men and women choose to pursue chin liposuction anywhere from their late 20s through 60s, depending on when excess fat becomes a concern.
Is double chin liposuction worth it?
For patients with stubborn fat under the chin that doesn’t respond to diet and exercise, many find chin lipo very worthwhile. It provides long-term fat removal and improved jawline definition, and most patients are highly satisfied with the facial contour changes.
How long does double chin liposuction last?
Results are long-lasting, as the fat cells removed during liposuction do not return. Maintaining a stable weight helps to preserve your results, as significant weight gain can affect the surrounding tissues.
