What a Breast Lift Can (and Can’t) Change About Your Appearance

What a Breast Lift Can (and Can’t) Change About Your Appearance
Plastic SurgeryFebruary 3, 2026

A breast lift (technically referred to as a mastopexy) is one of the most common cosmetic procedures among women each year, and there are many reasons why. Pregnancy, weight loss and aging can all affect the shape, position and overall appearance of the breasts over time. For women who are happy with the size of their breasts but are looking to restore a firmer and more youthful look and feel, a breast lift may be the best solution.

To get the most out of your procedure, it’s important to first understand what a breast lift can and can’t change so you know exactly what to expect for your results. Having realistic expectations is one of the best ways to ensure high satisfaction and a positive overall experience from start to finish.

What a Breast Lift Can Change

A breast lift is designed to address sagging and loss of shape, not to dramatically alter breast size. Thus, one of the most noticeable changes after mastopexy surgery is improved breast position. Over time, pregnancy, weight changes, gravity and aging can cause the breasts to sit lower on the chest, with nipples that point downward. A lift raises the breasts to a more youthful position and re-centers the nipples so they face forward again.

A breast lift also removes excess skin, tightens remaining tissue and can reshape the breast tissue itself to create a firmer, rounder and more proportionate final result.

Finally, a breast lift can address asymmetry, where one breast is slightly larger than the other. One caveat to note, however, is that a breast lift on its own will favor the smaller breast when creating a more balanced look.

What a Breast Lift Can’t Change

Most notably, a breast lift doesn’t significantly increase breast volume. In fact, some women feel their breasts look slightly smaller afterward because excess skin has been removed and the shape is more compact. If volume is a concern, Dr. Harrington may recommend combining a lift with implants to achieve your desired result.

It’s also important to understand that scars are part of the process, though Dr. Harrington takes great care to place incisions discreetly. Additionally, scars should flatten and fade over time, becoming less noticeable. For most breast lift patients, the tradeoff is well worth it – but it is  something to consider prior to moving forward with any surgical procedure.

When a Breast Lift Makes the Most Sense

A breast lift is often ideal for women who are happy with their breast size but unhappy with sagging, nipple position or loss of firmness. This procedure is also very common after pregnancy or weight loss, when changes in breast shape look or feel more noticeable than changes in volume.
