Aging often results in a decrease in elastin, collagen and moisture, which can lead to sagging or wrinkly skin. Profound® is a nonsurgical treatment that stimulates the production of collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid, the three essential elements for young and healthy skin.* By creating controlled fractional injuries in the skin, Profound RF is used by both men and women to treat a number of cosmetic concerns, including a double chin, “turkey neck” or a sagging jawline.*
Dr. Jennifer Harrington is a board-certified plastic surgeon with extensive experience working with people from all walks of life to enhance their appearance. She offers only the highest quality treatments, and will further explain the details and benefits of Profound RF during your consultation.
Harrington + Associates Plastic Surgery has served men and women from the Twin Cities and throughout Minnesota with surgical and nonsurgical procedures. Contact us online or call our Plymouth office today at 651-290-7600 for more information about Profound, including pricing.
Who Is a Good Candidate for Profound?
Almost any man or woman interested in reducing skin laxity around the face or neck can be a good candidate for Profound RF treatments. Some of the most common reasons people consider Profound include:
- Sagging jawline, jowls or deep wrinkles in the lower face and neck
- The appearance of a double chin due to sagging
- A desire to improve skin laxity without undergoing a surgical facelift
Your Profound Treatment
Profound uses a bipolar RF system with microneedle electrodes to create fractional thermal injuries in the skin. The device uses temperature control to help protect the skin’s surface.* These microinjuries stimulate the production of collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid, all important elements that can restore facial volume and firmness of the skin and tissue.* For this reason, Profound treatments are sometimes referred to as “nonsurgical facelifts.”
Your Profound RF treatment will be performed by Dr. Harrington or her certified physician assistant and nurses. First, a local anesthetic will be applied to ensure that you remain as comfortable as possible during your appointment. The Profound hand piece is then placed over the treatment areas and the radiofrequency needles penetrate the skin’s surface, releasing controlled energy to a precise depth in the dermis to stimulate the production of collagen and elastin.*
Depending on your goals, Dr. Harrington may recommend additional treatments to help you get the most out of your Profound results. BOTOX® and dermal fillers are popular injectables for temporarily smoothing out wrinkles and deep creases, while Kybella™ offers a nonsurgical treatment for a double chin and may be combined with Profound to further improve the jawline.*
While Profound is a minimally invasive treatment, you may still experience mild redness, swelling or bruising for the first several days following your appointment.* You may also notice some texture irregularities as your skin sheds some of its older layers.* Dr. Harrington and her staff will provide you with detailed post-treatment instructions, including skin care and sun protection.
Most people who get Profound have a significant increase in collagen and elastin by 10 weeks post-treatment.* While you may be content with a single treatment, you may also wish to schedule additional treatments to build upon your results. Dr. Harrington will help you determine the best treatment plan for meeting your goals.
While complications associated with Profound RF treatments are rare, it’s still important to discuss any potential risks with Dr. Harrington before undergoing treatment. If you experience excessive bleeding, sharp pain or a sudden increase in swelling, notify our office immediately.
Profound can tighten and firm the skin and tissue throughout the face and neck.* If you have questions or would like more information, please contact us online or call our Plymouth office at 651-290-7600 to schedule your Profound consultation and learn more.
Profound® RF FAQs
What is the Profound system?
The Profound system is a handpiece containing five pairs of microneedles with electrodes that emit radiofrequency waves into the dermis. This process gently heats the skin and tissue to stimulate the production of the three major skin essentials: collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid. By increasing these important compounds, Profound treatments can lift, tone and tighten the skin without surgery.*
How does the Profound system work?
As we age, our bodies produce less and less collagen and elastin, leading to a gradual increase in sagging or loose skin and tissue. This can create deep facial creases, sagging jowls and other cosmetic concerns. The Profound system triggers a dermal remodeling process by applying precise thermal doses into the area with the highest natural concentration of collagen, the deep reticular dermis. This remodeling process stimulates a burst of new collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid as your skin responds the way it would to a wound or burn. At the same time, surface cooling is applied to the treated area to maintain maximal comfort and prevent skin or tissue damage.*
Where can Profound treatments be applied?
Profound treatments can be used to treat premature aging in the face, jawline and neck. Many people use Profound treatments to help minimize sagging jowls or decrease deep wrinkles in the lower face, providing a nonsurgical alternative to a facelift. The Profound system can also be used to treat a double chin or “turkey neck.”*
How should I prepare for Profound treatments?
Because Profound treatments are minimally invasive, most people don’t need to take any special steps to prepare for treatment. Dr. Harrington and her staff will explain any steps you can take before or after treatment to get the most out of your results, such as daily sun protection or spa treatments.
How long does a Profound treatment take?
The exact length of your Profound RF appointment will depend on the area being treated. Most Profound treatments take around 1 hour.
Is there downtime after getting a Profound treatment?
Profound treatments involve minimal downtime, but you can expect some redness and swelling for a few days to 1 week following your appointment. Textural irregularities may last slightly longer than 1 week.*
How many Profound treatments are recommended?
Most people benefit from only a single Profound treatment to tighten and tone the skin of the face or neck. However, if you wish to improve upon your results, you may wish to consider additional skin rejuvenation treatments. Dr. Harrington can help you develop a treatment plan that fits your unique needs and concerns.
