Breast Augmentation Anesthesia – 3 Big Questions

We get a lot of questions about anesthesia, especially from women considering breast augmentation. It’s completely natural to feel a little anxious about this aspect of enhancing your breasts, but asking questions and doing a little research are the best ways to give you peace of mind.

To get you started, here are the answers to three of the most frequently asked questions about anesthesia during breast implant surgery.

  1. Will I Be Completely Asleep?

Breast augmentation requires general anesthesia, even though it is a fairly quick procedure to perform (45 minutes to 1 hour in most cases). This means you will be completely asleep and unaware of what’s going on around you. This also means that you won’t remember anything about the procedure itself when you wake up.

If you are combining your augmentation with a breast lift or body contouring procedure such as liposuction or a tummy tuck, you will be under general anesthesia for a longer period of time. Throughout your procedure at our accredited surgery center, a certified anesthesia provider is closely monitoring your vital signs while Dr. Harrington and her surgical staff complete the procedure.

  2. Is Anesthesia Painful?

No, today’s advanced anesthesia techniques are not painful. Anesthesia can be administered via gas or IV, so the most uncomfortable part would be the pinprick you might feel if you’ll be getting an IV. Otherwise, you shouldn’t feel any pain or discomfort.

  3. How Long Does It Take to Wake up after Anesthesia?

Arrange for someone to drive you to and from your breast augmentation surgery.

It usually takes 30 minutes to an hour to wake up after anesthesia, but you shouldn’t drive for at least 24 hours after your surgery.

Dr. Harrington will prescribe you pain medication to handle discomfort and speed recovery following breast implant surgery. Heed all warnings and indications on your prescription medicine as well.
