Your Hormone Balancing Program
During your initial office visit, Dr. Harrington will review your medical history, current medications (including vitamins and herbal supplements) and lifestyle, as well as any symptoms of hormonal imbalance you may be experiencing. Dr. Harrington and her staff will then perform comprehensive testing of your hormone levels, including hormones produced by the reproductive, thyroid and adrenal systems. This involves both saliva and blood tests for the most accurate results.
Approximately 2 weeks after your initial testing, your results will be ready. At this point, you should return to our office to learn about your hormone levels and the best way to move forward.
Reproductive Hormone Therapy
If your test results reveal an imbalance in reproductive hormones (progesterone, estrogen and testosterone), we may prescribe a low-dose bio-identical hormone tablet, cream or nutritional supplement. Bio-identical hormones are identical to the body’s naturally occurring hormones in both structure and dosage.* We prescribe bio-identical hormones in precise doses designed to not overwhelm your body or create other imbalances.
Reproductive hormone therapy is most frequently prescribed in cream form. To administer the treatment, patients simply measure out the advised daily dose of the hormone cream and rub it into the skin as instructed until it is absorbed.
Thyroid Hormone Therapy
If the results of hormone testing reveal abnormal levels of thyroid-produced hormones, we may prescribe oral medication, nutritional supplements or a combination. Thyroid hormones cannot be effectively balanced with topical cream. If test results reveal severely elevated levels of thyroid hormones, you may be referred to a specialist for further diagnosis and treatment.
Adrenal Hormone Therapy
Treating an imbalance of adrenal hormones is more complicated, as adrenal hormone levels fluctuate throughout the day. A normal adrenal curve reflects a higher level of the cortisol hormone in the morning that declines as the day wears on. Adrenal hormone treatment varies in relation to the adrenal hormone curve. In general, adrenal hormone treatment consists of lifestyle modifications, nutritional supplements, a prescription of orally administered cortisol or a combination.*
An imbalance of adrenal hormones is often a response to stress, and consequently can lead to an imbalance of thyroid or reproductive hormones.* If we notice that adrenal hormones are out of balance, we may recommend certain changes in diet or lifestyle habits that you can implement immediately to help manage the effects that stress has on the body and to start to restore hormonal balance.*
Dr. Harrington requests that all hormone balancing therapy patients return for a follow-up appointment after the initial 2 months of treatment. Although individual experiences vary, most patients by that point have begun to notice changes in their bodies such as higher quality sleep, reduction in unhealthy cravings, long-awaited weight loss or more consistent moods.*
Dr. Harrington and her staff may choose to retest your hormone levels during your follow-up appointment to ensure that your treatment plan is effective and is not affecting other physiological functions. Depending on the results of the second round of hormone tests, Dr. Harrington may fine-tune aspects of your treatment plan. She will also talk with you about incorporating long-term lifestyle adjustments to maintain a balance in hormones and gradually wean off of supplements.
